Solar Water Pumping

Solar Water Pumping Systems

A solar water pumping system runs a surface or submersible pump directly from solar modules through a pump controller, delivering water during daylight hours without diesel or grid supply.

A solar water pumping system runs a surface or submersible pump directly from solar modules through a pump controller, delivering water during daylight hours without diesel or grid supply.

Overview

Solar pumping is sized on hydraulics, not on roof area: total dynamic head, required daily water volume, borewell or source characteristics and the delivery point determine pump and array size.

GLS supplies and installs solar pumping systems with array mounting, controller, cabling, protection and dry-run safeguards, along with commissioning and performance checks.

Solar powered water pump with panel array irrigating an agricultural field

Who it is for

  • Farms and agricultural landholdings
  • Horticulture and plantation irrigation
  • Rural and institutional water supply
  • Sites with no grid connection or costly diesel pumping

How it works

Hydraulic sizing

Static head, friction loss, drawdown and daily water requirement define the duty point.

Pump and controller

AC pump with VFD controller or DC pump, selected for the duty point and source depth.

Array and structure

Module array sized to run the pump across the usable solar day on a fixed or seasonally adjustable structure.

Protection

Dry-run protection, overload and surge protection, and proper earthing for pump and array.

Key benefits

  • No diesel or grid electricity cost for pumping
  • Operation during daylight with minimal attention
  • Low moving-part maintenance compared with diesel sets
  • Workable at sites without any grid connection

Technical considerations

Output variability
Flow follows available sunlight, so daily delivery varies across seasons and weather. Storage tanks buffer this where continuous supply is needed.
Source data
Borewell yield, static water level and drawdown must be known; sizing without them risks pump damage or shortfall.
Subsidy schemes
Government support for solar pumping changes periodically. We will tell you only what the prevailing scheme currently provides at the time of your enquiry, rather than quoting outdated figures.

Process

  1. 01 — Consultation

We understand your load profile, electricity bill, tariff category and objective.

  2. 02 — Site Assessment

Roof or land survey covering area, orientation, shadow, structure and electrical infrastructure.

  3. 03 — System Design

Capacity sizing, layout, module and inverter selection, cable and protection design.

  4. 04 — Proposal & Planning

Detailed scope, bill of materials, indicative generation and commercial proposal.

  5. 05 — Engineering & Installation

Structure fabrication and erection, module mounting, DC and AC works, earthing and protection.

  6. 06 — Testing & Commissioning

Insulation, polarity, string current, earthing and inverter commissioning checks.

  7. 07 — Grid Integration / Handover

Coordination for net-metering or grid approval where applicable, then documented handover.

  8. 08 — Monitoring & O&M

Generation review, scheduled cleaning and inspection, and corrective maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

  • Will a solar pump work on cloudy days?

It will run at reduced output when irradiance is low and may stop in heavy cloud. Where supply must be continuous, systems are designed with storage tanks sized for such days.

  • Do solar pumps need batteries?

Usually not. Most systems pump directly into a tank during the day, which is cheaper and simpler than storing electricity in batteries.
