Frequently asked questions
Solar questions, answered without the sales gloss
Each answer starts with the direct response, then explains it. Where a figure depends on policy, a datasheet or your site, we say so instead of guessing.
Cost, Sizing & Savings
How much does a solar system cost?
Cost depends on capacity, system type (on-grid, off-grid or hybrid), roof condition, structure height and the components selected. GLS quotes against your actual site and consumption after an assessment, so the figure reflects your project rather than an advertised per-kW rate.
What solar capacity does my home need?
Capacity is derived from your electricity consumption over the last 6–12 months, your usable shade-free roof area and your sanctioned load. A home consuming more during the day can usefully absorb a larger share of generation.
How much electricity will a solar system generate?
Generation depends on location, orientation, tilt, shading, module and inverter efficiency, temperature and soiling. GLS provides an indicative annual generation estimate with its assumptions stated; it is an estimate, not a guarantee.
Will solar reduce my electricity bill to zero?
Rarely. Fixed charges usually continue, and most systems are sized for self-consumption rather than full offset. Expect a reduction in imported units, with the extent depending on sizing and your consumption pattern.
Is there a government subsidy for rooftop solar?
Subsidy and incentive schemes change periodically and depend on consumer category and utility. We confirm what is actually applicable at the time of your enquiry rather than publishing figures that may be out of date.
System Types & Technology
What is the difference between on-grid and off-grid solar?
On-grid systems work alongside the utility grid without batteries and stop generating during an outage. Off-grid systems use batteries to run loads independently of the grid, at a higher cost and with battery replacement over time.
What is a hybrid solar system?
A hybrid system combines solar, batteries and the grid through a single inverter. It gives self-consumption plus backup for selected loads, usually with a smaller battery bank than a full off-grid design.
How does rooftop solar actually work?
Modules on your roof generate DC electricity, an inverter converts it to AC at your building voltage, and your loads consume it first. Any surplus is exported to the grid or stored in batteries, depending on the system type.
How do I choose a solar inverter?
Match the inverter to the array size, your supply phase, the roof orientations involved and whether you need battery backup. Multiple MPPTs help where orientation or shading varies across the roof.
Do solar panels work in cloudy or rainy weather?
Yes, but at reduced output. Generation follows available irradiance, so overcast days produce a fraction of clear-sky output and annual estimates already account for seasonal weather.
Installation, Approvals & Maintenance
What is the solar installation process?
Consultation, site assessment, system design, proposal, engineering and installation, testing and commissioning, grid integration or handover, and then monitoring and maintenance. Each stage is documented before moving to the next.
What approvals are needed for rooftop solar?
Grid-connected systems require net metering or connectivity approval from the distribution utility, following its prevailing process. GLS coordinates the documentation and liaison for the applicable scope.
How long do solar panels last?
PV modules are long-life components with gradual output degradation over decades. The applicable product and performance warranty terms come from the module manufacturer for the model supplied.
How often should solar panels be maintained?
Module cleaning frequency depends on dust, bird activity and rainfall at your site; electrical connections, earthing and inverter logs are checked on a periodic schedule. A site-specific plan is set during handover.
What warranty applies to a solar system?
Modules, inverters, batteries and other components carry warranties from their respective manufacturers. GLS shares the applicable warranty documents for the components quoted and supports claim coordination.
Commercial, Industrial & Large Projects
Is commercial rooftop solar worth considering?
It is worth evaluating when you have significant day-time consumption, a commercial or HT tariff and usable roof area. The assessment should compare generation against your actual consumption profile rather than assume full offset.
How does solar EPC work?
One contractor takes engineering, procurement and construction responsibility: design, material supply, civil and electrical execution, testing and commissioning, handed over as a working plant with documentation.
Can solar be installed on an industrial sheet roof?
Yes, using mounting hardware matched to the sheet profile and purlin structure. A structural and roof-condition check precedes design so the roof and its waterproofing are not compromised.
Who maintains a large solar plant after commissioning?
Either your in-house team with specialist support, or GLS under an O&M scope covering preventive visits, electrical checks, performance review and corrective work.
Does GLS handle solar water pumping and street lighting too?
Yes. Alongside rooftop and EPC work, GLS supplies and installs solar water pumping systems and standalone solar street lighting, both sized from site requirements.
