Overview

A rooftop solar system generates direct current from photovoltaic modules, which an inverter converts to alternating current at your building's voltage. The output is consumed by your loads first; the balance is either exported to the grid or stored in batteries, depending on the system type.

GLS handles the full scope: structural and shadow assessment, capacity sizing against your consumption, module and inverter selection, mounting structure design, DC and AC works, earthing and lightning protection, commissioning and documentation.

Who it is for

  • Independent houses and villas with usable terrace area
  • Apartment associations looking to offset common-area consumption
  • Shops, clinics, schools and small offices
  • Buildings with a high day-time electricity load

How it works

Generation

Modules produce DC power whenever there is usable irradiance; output varies with sunlight, temperature, shading and soiling.

Conversion

A string or hybrid inverter converts DC to AC and synchronises with your internal distribution board.

Consumption

Your loads use solar output first, so the meter records fewer imported units during generating hours.

Balance handling

Surplus is exported under net metering on an on-grid system, or charged into batteries on an off-grid or hybrid system.

Key benefits

  • Lower monthly electricity import from the grid
  • Predictable, long-life asset on an otherwise unused roof
  • Reduced exposure to future tariff increases
  • Lower carbon footprint for the building
  • Optional battery backup where supply is unreliable

Technical considerations

System sizing
Capacity is sized from your last 6–12 months of consumption, available shade-free area and sanctioned load — not from a standard package.
Area requirement
As a planning guide, roughly 65–100 sq ft of shade-free area is needed per kW, depending on module wattage and structure height.
Structure
Hot-dip galvanised or pre-galvanised structures are designed for local wind loading and roof condition, with non-penetrative ballast where waterproofing must be preserved.
Maintenance
Module cleaning frequency depends on dust and site conditions; electrical connections, earthing and inverter logs are checked periodically.
Warranties
Product and performance warranties are issued by the respective manufacturers. GLS shares the applicable warranty documents for the components quoted for your project.

Process

  1. 01 — Consultation

We understand your load profile, electricity bill, tariff category and objective.

  2. 02 — Site Assessment

Roof or land survey covering area, orientation, shadow, structure and electrical infrastructure.

  3. 03 — System Design

Capacity sizing, layout, module and inverter selection, cable and protection design.

  4. 04 — Proposal & Planning

Detailed scope, bill of materials, indicative generation and commercial proposal.

  5. 05 — Engineering & Installation

Structure fabrication and erection, module mounting, DC and AC works, earthing and protection.

  6. 06 — Testing & Commissioning

Insulation, polarity, string current, earthing and inverter commissioning checks.

  7. 07 — Grid Integration / Handover

Coordination for net-metering or grid approval where applicable, then documented handover.

  8. 08 — Monitoring & O&M

Generation review, scheduled cleaning and inspection, and corrective maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much roof area does a rooftop solar system need?

Plan for roughly 65–100 sq ft of shade-free area per kW. The exact figure depends on module wattage, tilt and the clearance required for cleaning and airflow. A site assessment confirms what your roof can hold.

  • Will rooftop solar work during a power cut?

A standard on-grid system shuts down during a grid outage for safety. If you need power during outages, you need a hybrid or off-grid system with battery storage, which GLS can design instead.

  • How long does a rooftop installation take?

Timelines depend on system size, roof condition, material availability and utility approvals. GLS confirms a schedule in the proposal after the site assessment rather than quoting a standard duration.
